How to Use Concentrated Air Freshener in a Commercial Facility
Concentrated air freshener can help manage odours in washrooms, garbage areas, offices and other shared spaces. Because a small amount of concentrate can go a long way, the right amount depends on the product, the application and the area being treated. Using more than recommended may leave an overpowering scent without addressing the source of the odour.

Find and address the source first
Air freshener works best as part of a cleaning routine. Check for the cause of a persistent smell: an unemptied bin, a floor drain, damp carpet, a soiled surface or a waste area that needs attention. Clean the affected area using the appropriate cleaning product before applying an air freshener.
This matters because fragrance alone may temporarily cover an odour. If the source remains, the smell is likely to return. Good ventilation and regular cleaning also help maintain air quality and reduce recurring odours.
Match dilution to the application
Concentrated products can have different use rates for different tasks. A dilution suitable for a mop bucket may not be appropriate for a garbage receptacle or room deodorizing. Follow the product label for the specific use, and measure the concentrate rather than estimating. Measuring helps staff apply the same amount consistently across shifts.
For example, Econo-Chem’s Fresh Scent listing gives different dilution amounts for garbage receptacles, mop buckets, automatic scrubbers and room deodorizing. Those amounts are specific to the product and application; don't treat them as a general ratio for every concentrated air freshener.
Consider the size and conditions of the area
A large, busy space may need a different maintenance schedule than a small washroom, but increasing the concentration isn't automatically the answer. Consider the area’s size, airflow, traffic and how often the odour source is cleaned. In a confined or poorly ventilated room, a strong fragrance can quickly become unpleasant. In a high-traffic area, more frequent cleaning or reapplication at the labelled dilution may be more suitable.
For spot treatment, use only the method described for that surface or odour source. Avoid applying concentrate to materials that could be damaged, and test an inconspicuous area when surface compatibility is uncertain.
Keep application consistent and safe
Assign a consistent dilution and application method for each task, and make sure staff can identify the correct product and measuring equipment. Do not mix air freshener with other cleaners unless the product label specifically allows it. Store concentrates in their original, labelled containers and follow the product’s handling and safety information.
If odours persist after cleaning and correct application, investigate the source rather than increasing the dose. A leak, blocked drain, moisture problem or waste-handling issue may need attention.
