Best Practices to Keep Your Restaurant Floors (and Other Areas) Clean

Keeping your restaurant floors and other important surfaces clean is of the utmost importance to the health and safety of everyone in your restaurant. A clean, sanitized restaurant prevents food contamination, the spread of contagious diseases, and even prevents slip-and-falls.

Restaurant cleaning must be completed throughout the day in order to keep floors, refrigerators, and important high-touch surfaces clean and sanitized. Employing the best practices for cleaning and disinfecting your restaurant will make sure that your employees and customers are safe and healthy.

Today, we’re going to discuss some important best practices that you can immediately put to use to enhance the cleanliness and safety of your restaurant.

1. Use The Right Restaurant Cleaning Supplies

You need the right commercial cleaning products to effectively clean and sanitize your restaurant. However, you don’t necessarily need dozens of different cleaners.

A general-purpose cleaner, such as our biodegradable
Econo Clean Concentrate, allows your restaurant cleaning team to clean the vast majority of your restaurant with the same cleaner. You may still need specialized cleansers for some equipment and unique situations, but an all-purpose cleanser will work for most cases.

Other safe cleaning products that you will need to have on hand are:

  • Hand sanitizer
  • Bleach
  • Disinfectant wipes
  • Paper towels
  • Cleaning gloves and other protective equipment
  • A cleanser for stainless steel

As you’re shopping for supplies, it’s best to prioritize environmentally safe cleaning products. Not only do these products decrease the environmental impact of your restaurant, but they are also generally less toxic and harmful to your employees and customers, because they do not have hazardous materials.

2. Keep Your Restaurant Sanitized

The COVID-19 pandemic created an entirely new reason why restaurants need to increase the frequency of cleaning and carry out ongoing sanitization. Following cleaning and sanitization guidelines such as having alcohol based hand sanitizer by your doors and restrooms is expected.

Maintaining the presence of hand sanitizer is important not only to create safer conditions for your customers, but equally important for food safety. Buying a
bulk restaurant sanitizer solution will allow your restaurant to regularly fill reusable hand sanitizer containers. The presence of hand sanitizers throughout your restaurant passively encourages guests and employees to sanitize their hands, preventing the spread of any diseases throughout the restaurant.

Ensure that the cleaner that you use for your floor and other dirty surfaces is also a sanitizer. Keeping the floor, prep surfaces, counters, and tables regularly sanitized ensures the safety of your staff and patrons.

3. Create a Restaurant Cleaning Schedule

Every restaurant requires a robust cleaning schedule that covers the kitchen, dining area floor, and other important surfaces. The floor should be cleaned at the end of every shift (breakfast, lunch, dinner). Other surfaces should be cleaned throughout the day at regular intervals based on how busy the restaurant is.

The restaurant floors must be deep cleaned at least two to four times per year. Deep cleaning is a process that aims to address the buildup in the pores of the grout, tile, or other susceptible surfaces on your floor. Even with daily cleaning, this buildup still occurs. Deep cleaning is generally accomplished by applying a degreaser and then cleaning the floor with a rotary machine.

Create a cleaning schedule that employees can follow daily. It should specifically focus on cleaning floors, counters, prep areas, floor mats,  and any other high-traffic area throughout the day. Make sure to add deep cleaning to your maintenance calendar as well.
